Annie en Mac

Het is zover, in het vijfde boek van de romance serie Dream Harbor krijgen we eindelijk het verhaal te horen van Annie en Mac. In de voorgaande delen was al duidelijk dat er tussen beide personages iets misgelopen is waardoor ze zelfs niet samen in één ruimte kunnen zijn. Maar deze keer zullen ze echter niet anders kunnen en is elkaar ontlopen onmogelijk.

Jeannie en Logan (De Pumpkin Spice Café) trouwen en het ganse dorp wil erbij betrokken zijn. Annie die de Gingerbread Bakkerij uitbaat is verantwoordelijk voor de bruidstaart. Dus heeft ze heel wat verantwoordelijkheid. De dag voor de trouw verdwijnt echter Logans oma, Estelle. Om Jeannie noch Logan net voor hun belangrijke dag te veel zorgen doen maken wordt aan Annie gevraagd om haar te zoeken. En toevallig is Mac in de buurt en biedt hij zijn hulp aan. Annie kan bijna niet anders dan het aanvaarden, hoewel het dik tegen haar zin is. Tijdens hun zoektocht echter wordt geleidelijk aan duidelijk wat er in het verleden is gebeurd waardoor Annie zo nors doet tegenover Mac, die eigenlijk nog steeds heel erg verliefd is op Annie. Zullen ze allebei het trouwfeest samen vieren of is de breuk tussen beide onherstelbaar?

Van alle delen in de reeks was dit tot nu toe mijn minst favoriete en dat heeft heel veel te maken met de aanhoudende negativiteit die er doorheen het verhaal heerst. Bij elke lichte toenadering of net als je denkt dat het eindelijk allemaal goed zal komen tussen hen beide, verandert iemand toch terug van gedachten en ontstaat er opnieuw ruzie of wordt er afstand gekweekt tussen beide personages, en dit gaat het doorheen het ganse boek door.

Maar het is wel opnieuw een verhaal dat bol staat van romantiek, een beetje smut en hoewel er met clichés gesmeten wordt (je mag niks anders verwachten bij deze reeks en dat maakt het ook net zo leuk, je weet waar je je kan aan verwachten en het is lichte lectuur tussen de vele zwaardere literatuur dat op ons afkomt) blijft het een leuke guilty pleasure om enkele uren in te verdwalen en te genieten van dit leuke stadje in Maine. Er wordt ook al een eerste stap gezet in dit boek naar de opvolger, de Daisy Chain Bloemenwinkel.

Annie and Mac

It’s finally here: in the fifth book of the Dream Harbor romance series, we finally get to hear Annie and Mac’s story. In the previous books, it had already become clear that something had gone wrong between them, to the point where they could barely stand to be in the same room together. This time, however, avoiding each other will be impossible.

Jeannie and Logan (The Pumpkin Spice Café) are getting married, and the whole town wants to be involved. Annie, who runs the Gingerbread Bakery, is responsible for the wedding cake, which comes with a lot of pressure. But the day before the wedding, Logan’s grandmother, Estelle, suddenly disappears. To spare Jeannie and Logan any extra stress right before their big day, Annie is asked to go look for her. Coincidentally, Mac is nearby and offers to help. Annie can hardly refuse, even though she is far from happy about it. During their search, it gradually becomes clear what happened in the past that made Annie so cold toward Mac — who is, in fact, still deeply in love with her. Will they end up celebrating the wedding together, or is the break between them beyond repair?

Out of all the books in the series, this one has been my least favorite so far, and that mainly has to do with the constant negativity running throughout the story. Every time there is even the slightest bit of progress, or just when you think things are finally going to work out between them, one of them changes their mind again, another argument breaks out, or more distance is created between the two characters. This cycle continues throughout the entire book.

That said, it is once again a story filled with romance, a bit of smut, and plenty of clichés — though that is exactly what you should expect from this series, and honestly, that is part of its charm. You know exactly what you are getting: light-hearted reading in between all the heavier literature out there. It remains a fun guilty pleasure to get lost in for a few hours and to enjoy spending time in this charming little town in Maine. The book also takes the first steps toward setting up the next installment, centered around the Daisy Chain Flower Shop.
