Betreden op eigen risico

Tess en Allie zijn vriendinnen die samen opgroeiden, nadat Tess uit een vreselijke thuissituatie bij de familie van Allie terechtkwam. Tess is ook schuw en komt niet heel graag buiten, zij is niet degene die dolgraag onnodige risico’s neemt. Allie daarentegen reist de hele wereld rond en blogt over deze reizen waar ze dan ook goed veel geld mee verdient. Tess is haar juridische assistente op Allies reisblog.

Allie heeft Tess eindelijk kunnen overtuigen om eens mee te gaan ondergronds om aan grotverkenning te doen. Onder de leiding van Allie die wel wat gewoon is, maken ze zich klaar om af te dalen in de duisternis. Bij het betreden van de grot wacht hen een nogal dreigende en gevaarlijke verrassing maar daar laten ze zich niet door afschrikken en ze zetten door. Echter tijdens hun verkenningstocht loopt één en ander grondig mis en komt hun grootste nachtmerrie uit.

Tess wordt ondervraagd door de politie in het ziekenhuis, nadat zij is ontsnapt aan hun beproevingen waarbij Allie echter niet levend uit de grot is gekomen. Tess doet het verhaal aan de rechercheur over een bewogen tocht doorheen de grot en over een dreiging die hen vast heeft gezet in de nauwe donkere gangen van zowel de spelonken als van een duister geheim dat geleidelijk aan ontrafeld wordt.

Mijn mening over deze thriller is heel dubbel. Het verhaal en de locaties in het boek zijn beklemmend en, vooral de scenes in de grotten, voelen heel claustrofobisch aan, wat zeker het verhaal goed doet. Ik moest vaak denken aan de film The Descent als ik het las. Maar er is ook een beetje een keerzijde aan dit boek. Het zit namelijk vol plottwisten en hoewel ik daar heel erg van houd, moet het nog geloofwaardig blijven en blijft het beter beperkt met het aantal twists die in een verhaal voorkomen. Niet iedereen kan een boek schrijven waarin je telkens op het verkeerde been wordt gezet zoals Dan Brown dat kan (en dan werd dit nog het meest getolereerd in zijn eerste boeken maar naarmate zijn reeks rond Langdon uitbreidde vond ik het ook niet meer echt plezant).

Adams schrijft zeker geen slecht verhaal maar beperkt zich beter wat meer tot de essentie en beperkt zijn twists tot een minimum om de lezer niet te willen blijven verbazen (wat vermoeiend werkt op den duur). En zoals gezegd, sommige plotwendingen zijn dan zodanig abrupt dat ze ongeloofwaardig worden.

Niettegenstaande las ik het boek in één zitting uit, dus het leest heel vlot en gaat zijn gang wel. Je wilt echt wel weten waar het heen gaat en hoe de vork aan de steel zit maar je moet er eerst wel heel wat gangetjes, bochten en afdalingen voor ondergaan om tot de conclusie te komen.

Tess and Allie are friends who grew up together after Tess escaped a terrible home situation and was taken in by Allie’s family. Tess is shy and doesn’t like going outside very much; she’s definitely not someone who enjoys taking unnecessary risks. Allie, on the other hand, travels all over the world and blogs about her adventures, earning a great deal of money from them. Tess works as the legal assistant for Allie’s travel blog.

Allie has finally managed to convince Tess to join her on an underground cave exploration trip. Under Allie’s experienced guidance, they prepare to descend into the darkness. Upon entering the cave, they are met with a rather ominous and dangerous surprise, but they refuse to let it scare them off and continue onward. However, during their expedition, things go terribly wrong and their worst nightmare becomes reality.

Tess is questioned by the police in a hospital after surviving their ordeal, while Allie did not make it out of the cave alive. Tess recounts the story to the detective: a harrowing journey through the cave system and a threat that trapped them within the narrow, dark passages of both the caverns and a sinister secret that gradually unravels.

My opinion on this thriller is quite mixed. The story and locations in the book are oppressive and, especially during the cave scenes, feel incredibly claustrophobic, which definitely benefits the atmosphere of the story. While reading, I often found myself thinking of the movie The Descent. However, there is also a downside to the book. It is packed with plot twists, and although I usually love that, they still need to remain believable, and it’s better to limit the number of twists in a story. Not everyone can write a book that constantly misleads the reader the way Dan Brown can (and even then, I only really tolerated it in his earlier books; as his Langdon series expanded, I stopped enjoying it as much).

Adams certainly doesn’t write a bad story, but he would do better to focus more on the core of the narrative and keep the twists to a minimum instead of constantly trying to surprise the reader, which eventually becomes exhausting. And as mentioned before, some plot developments are so abrupt that they become unbelievable.

Nevertheless, I finished the book in a single sitting, so it reads very smoothly and keeps the pace going. You genuinely want to know where the story is heading and what is really going on, but you first have to endure quite a few tunnels, twists, and descents before finally reaching the conclusion.
