Het Ontzet is het laatste deel van Tad Williams’ vierdelige epos Heugenis, Smart en het Sterrenzwaard, de reeks die George R.R. Martin inspireerde om Het Lied van IJs en Vuur te schrijven. Prins Jozua, boodschapper Simon en hun volgelingen zijn op krachten gekomen in hun schuilplaats de Steen des Afscheids. Tijdens hun voorbereidingen op de allerlaatste, allesbeslissende veldslag moeten zij woeste zeeën boordevol bloeddorstige kilpa weerstaan. Zij zwerven door wouden waar de geest- en ziellozen huizen en door oude grotten die nog door de legendarische dwargen zijn gebouwd. Om pas dan te arriveren bij de spookachtige zalen van het kasteel Asu’a – de grootste burcht van de Sithi…

Review:

De saga van de drie zwaarden (Heugenis, Smart en het Sterrenzwaard) is eindelijk voorbij… Het heeft me een aantal jaren gekost om de vier kanjers van boeken uit te lezen, maar uiteindelijk ben ik er dan toch in geslaagd.

Dit volume van de reeks gaat verder waar het voorgaande deel eindigde, De Groene Engeltoren, deel 1: De Belegering… de groepen die waren samengekomen splitsen terug op… Simon en Miriamele trekken naar de Hayholt, onderweg belaagd door Vuurdansers en andere gevaren, om daar Koning Elias te proberen overtuigen te stoppen met zijn plannen, als ze voor de hogepriester Pryrates geraken tenminste. Binabik de trol vervoegt hen op een bepaald moment ook met zijn wolf. Eens aangekomen gaan ze ook op zoek naar het derde zwaard en belanden in de ondergrondse tunnels onder de burcht.

Jozua en zijn leger wonnen de slag aan De Steen des Afscheids en trekken nu met hun leger naar Naglimund, waar ze een slag tegen de Witte Vossen, ofte Nornen, zullen aangaan.

In de Hayholt bereiden Elias en Pryrates hunnen plannen verder voor, leeft Rachel de Draak nog steeds verdoken en probeert ze de nu blinde Guthwulf eten te geven.

Een laatste veldslag aan de Hoge Burcht wordt onvermijdelijk, de nodige slachtoffers en offers zullen hiervan het gevolg zijn. Zullen ze het onvermijdelijke kunnen stoppen. Zullen de Sithi hen helpen? Welke rol spelen de Dwargen? Welke geheimen komen nog naar boven? En zullen Simon, Miriamele en Binabik erin slagen de drie zwaarden te bemachtigen en in de Groene Engeltoren geraken?

Dit was terug een heel spannend verhaal, perfect voor de fans van fantasy. George R.R. Martin startte zijn ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ na het lezen van deze boeken, en dat merk je af en toe ook wel, enkele elementen zijn heel gelijkaardig.

Tad Williams is een meester in het bouwen van werelden (wie ooit zijn Anderland reeks las weet dit ook!) en Osten Ard is een echte fantastische (en fantasievolle) wereld vol eigenaardige creaturen (ghanten, kilpa’s, sithi, dwargen, nornen…) met heel aangename ‘good guys’ en ultieme slechteriken.

De vier boeken zijn natuurlijk kanjers (deze was ook weer 680 bladzijden) waardoor de actie blijft voortgaan. Op een bepaald moment denk je ‘Wat kan er nog allemaal gebeuren eer het voorbij is’ maar alles dient in het verhaal en vervelen doet het zeker niet!

Intussen is Williams teruggekeerd naar zijn Osten Ard in een nieuwe reeks (The Last King of Osten Ard) die ik graag heel binnenkort zou willen beginnen lezen. Benieuwd wat die te bieden zal hebben!

Ga lekker languit met de vier boeken van de reeks in je zetel of luie sofa zitten/liggen en geniet van een uitgebreide wereld vol mysterie en spanning!

Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn takes place on the fictional continent of Osten Ard, home to several united races, including humans, elf-like immortals known as Sithi, and dwarf-like mountain-dwellers named Qanuc. Most of these races have been living in relative unity for decades, thanks to King John the Presbyter (also known as Prester John), who is known to have slain a dragon. The first novel opens when Prester John’s health in his advanced age is failing and his sons, Elias and Josua, quarrel over who will ascend to the throne. Meanwhile, a dark secret held by Prester John, and the ambitions of a priest named Pryrates, threaten the stability of the continent. Williams used several characters, both villain and protagonist, as point of view characters throughout the scope of the novels.

The series primarily follows Simon, a lowly kitchen scullion in Hayholt Castle, as he undergoes tutelage from Doctor Morgenes and is cared for by Rachel “the Dragon”, the matriarch of the castle’s kitchen and chambermaids. When King John dies, Elias takes the throne with the mysterious priest Pryrates as his advisor; Josua mysteriously disappears and the seasons begin changing, bringing bitter winters and drought-laden summers. Simon, ever the mischievous adventurer, accidentally uncovers some of Pryrates’ true nature and becomes wrapped into a conspiracy that not only threatens his country of Erkynland, but Osten Ard itself.

About To Green Angel Tower part 2: Storm

Miriamele and Simon embark on a perilous quest through war- and magic-torn lands as they and the valiant followers of Josua Lackhand struggle to make a stand against the Storm King’s seemingly unstoppable…

Review:

After two years I finally finished this wonderful suspenseful fantasy series! Amazing world building, typical for Tad Williams! (see map below)

We follow Simon and Miriamele, who both fled the camp after the battle at the Stone of Farewell where Jozua’s army was victorious. They are going back to the Hayholt, to go and find the third sword and try and convince King Elias to stop his madness, if they can avoid High Priest Pryrates. Binabik joins them. While looking for the last sword they are separated and end up in the catacombs underneath the castle.

In the meantime is Jozua’s army going to Naglimund where they will try to defeat the ‘White Foxes’ and get back what they lost. Eventually a huge battle at the Hayholt will be the ultimate goal, to defeat King Elias.

Together with the previous instalments [among which also the first part of the third book (To Green Angel Tower)] this book offers us all the elements we know from a fantasy novel (or series): weird creatures, the good vs the evil, castles and battles… Williams keeps us at the edge of our seat, still expanding on the world we already know in this last book. We are thrown in the dark caverns and catacombs underneath the castle and the Hayholt, in a place called Asu’a (where the Sithi used to live)… Simon’s ordeals are not yet over and the thickness of this book (again) makes for an expanded and extended adventure for our heroes! Will they manage to defeat the evil and bring peace to Osten Ard?

Lay back and enjoy this series of great novels! And for those who don’t get enough of these books, Tad Williams has already started a new series situated in Osten Ard…. I’m really curious about that now as well, of course!
