Onder dieven

De perfecte overval is het tweede deel in de young adult reeks rond de tieners die nadat ze meededen met de Dievenspelen nu hun opgedane kennis van stelen en bedriegen in de praktijk mogen omzetten.
Rosalyn Quest verloor de Dievenspelen en werd bedreigd door Diane de moeder van Devroe, de tegenstander in de Dievenspelen die verliefd is op Ross, en nu staat Diane de familie van Rosalyn naar het leven. En nu staat er ook nog eens een leiderschap op het spel want beide families doen opnieuw mee aan een wedstrijd waarbij de winnaar de leiding krijgt over de criminele organisatie die onder andere de Spelen organiseert.
Het is Count, die de leiding neemt en waar Ross en haar moeder zich achter scharen, maar ook Mylo, Taiyõ, Noelia tegen dat van Baron, die Ross eerder al onder valse voorwaarden had ingelijfd voor een diefstal. De nieuwe Spelen omvatten drie quasi onmogelijke opdrachten waaronder een casino in Monte Carlo een hoop geld kwijt laten spelen. Maar de strijd is bikkelhard en de vraag is wie kan je echt vertrouwen onder dieven? Niet alleen is er de dreiging van een nakende dood door de moeder van Devroe maar ook ontdekt worden en op die manier om het leven te komen. En dan moeten ze ook nog elkaar leren vertrouwen.
Is het omdat er iets te veel tijd tussen de twee boeken zat dat ik dit boek net iets minder spannend vond dan de voorganger of ligt het echt aan het verhaal, ik kan het niet met zekerheid zeggen. Maar deze keer was ik minder onder de indruk van het verhaal. Er is natuurlijk de Enemy-to-lovers trope die heel hard naar voren komt in de aantrekking en afstoting tussen Ross en Devroe. Maar de andere personages verdwijnen allemaal net iets te veel op de achtergrond. Het is pas in de opdracht met het casino dat iedereen even mag ‘shinen’. Maar ik ben er wel van overtuigd dat een tiener die deze twee boeken leest heel hard zal genieten van de spannende scenes en climax in het boek.

Thieves’ Gambit 2. Heist Royale is the second installment in the young adult series about a group of teenagers who, after participating in the Thieves’ Games, now get the chance to put their newly acquired skills in stealing and deception into practice.
Rosalyn Quest lost the Thieves’ Gambit and was threatened by Diane, the mother of Devroe — Ross’s opponent in the Games, who also happens to be in love with her. Now Diane is after Rosalyn’s family. On top of that, a leadership position is at stake, as both families once again compete in a contest in which the winner will gain control of the criminal organization that organizes, among other things, the Games themselves.
Count is the one taking the lead, backed by Ross and her mother, as well as Mylo, Taiyõ, and Noelia, against Baron — the man who had previously recruited Ross for a theft under false pretenses. The new Games consist of three nearly impossible missions, one of which involves making a casino in Monte Carlo lose a fortune. But the competition is ruthless, and the question becomes: who can you really trust among thieves? Not only is there the looming threat of death at the hands of Devroe’s mother, but there is also the constant danger of being discovered and killed because of it. And on top of all that, they still have to learn to trust one another.
Maybe too much time had passed between reading the two books, causing this one to feel slightly less thrilling than its predecessor — or perhaps it really was the story itself; I honestly cannot say for certain. This time, I was simply a bit less impressed by the plot. Of course, the enemy-to-lovers trope is very prominent in the push-and-pull dynamic between Ross and Devroe. However, the other characters fade a little too much into the background. It is only during the casino mission that everyone finally gets a chance to shine. Still, I am convinced that teenage readers of these two books will thoroughly enjoy the exciting scenes and the climactic moments throughout the story.
