Review:

The second Mission: Impossible movie directed by Christopher Mcquarrie and the first one with music by Lorne Balfe. This is a direct sequel to Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation ànd Mission: Impossible III. It is also the longest M:I movie in the series so far with 2,5hrs approx…

After the IMF has been reinstated (with a new Secretary, Hunley) and the apprehension of Lane, Hunt is on the ‘hunt’ (pun intended) for the other Syndicate members. But after a mission goes awry, where Hunt looses three nuclear warheads, the CIA starts interfering. Hunt has to cooperate with Walker (Henry Cavill) to regain the warheads and to catch the head of a splinter cell of the Syndicate, the Apostles, Lark! No one has ever seen or heard Lark but he is even more ruthless than Lane was it seems.

Hunt and Walker go to Paris the Grand Palais to meet with The White Widow, after apprehending Lark. But as always nothing goes as easy as planned. When Hunt finally meets The White Widow (Vanessa Kirby) she wants him and her team to free Lane, who is transported in Paris. But Hunt has no plans to free a terrorist and makes plans of his own. But it seems all their missions seem to fail. And then comes Ilsa Faust back as well, trying to eliminate Lane!

When Hunt learns the truth about who Lark is, his whole life will be upended because not only is his own life in peril, so is that of a medical facility in Kashmir, where his ex-wife Julia (Michelle Monaghan) works! It’s up to Hunt and his team to disarm the nuclear bombs… a race against time starts!

This was the second time I watched this and I remembered not liking it very much the first time but apparently things have changed for me because I loved this movie the second time! There’s something thrilling about a vulnerable Tom Cruise and a personal stake to his motivation!

The final battle between helicopters and Hunt and his nemesis (not saying who it is!) is epic! But so is the chase in Paris! You can tell that the director has a keen eye to orchestrate action scenes and in that scene his mastership is clear!

Next is the first in a two-parter (probably the two last M:I movies with an already over sixty years old Tom Cruise) called Dead Reckoning, Part 1. I’ve seen that a few familiar faces will be back… I wonder if Jeremy Renner might return at one point as well? And if they make more M:I movies in the future, who will take the lead… this series has gotten such a following and is like a James Bond movie series so stopping it feels impossible…
