Review:

About ten years ago (or has it been longer?) I was excited about the news that Neill Blomkamp would love to make a sequel to the Alien franchise, disregarding all sequels that have been made since Alien 2: Alien. He wanted to bring back Sigourney Weaver and Michael Biehn and tell the story after the events of forementioned movie… (both actors already said they wanted to play their roles again at the time)… but everything went topsy turvy when Ridley Scott said no because he had his own idea for another addition to the franchise, which became ‘Prometheus’ a prequel to the Alien-franchise.

At the time I was very mad (still am, actually!) because I’m a huge fan of Blomkamp’s movies (have you seen District 9?)! By now, I’ve watched Prometheus three or four times now and although it’s not the worst movie, it’s not an Alien movie either (apart maybe from the name Weyland and those last two minutes in the movie) and I still don’t know what Scott wanted to gain by making this movie.

Having said my piece on that…

If you watch this movie as a separate movie, not being part of the Alien franchise, it’s a great sci-fi movie that you can easily watch on any day/evening with a big jar of popcorn! The cinematography and photography is amazing, the music creates a good ambience and there’s some great acting in here as well (Charlize Theron, Noomi Rapace kick ass!)

The opening scene, filmed in wonderful and beautiful Iceland, looks so good… it sets a tone for the locations used in the movie!

Maybe in the future, when rewatching this one, I shouldn’t think of it as an Alien movie and see it as a stand alone science fiction flick. But I just can’t shake the idea off of me which makes it a letdown for me, as an Alien movie… not as a sci-fi in general! The next and last movie in the franchise (and that one is part if the franchise because of it’s name alone… making this an Alien movie as there’s a recurring character! See, hard to let it go!) is Alien: Covenant. And soon there’s the tv-series about our xenomorphic friends! We’re not yet rid of them, that’s for sure!

  1. Perhaps it is worth seeing Prometheus as a stand alone sci-fi. Thanks for the thorough review and feel free to use my search bar to scroll through mine 🙂
