Mystery of Love

Elke zomer logeert een Amerikaanse student, op uitnodiging van Elio’s vader, in de villa aan de Italiaanse Rivièra. In de zomer ergens begin jaren tachtig komt Oliver aan, met zijn wapperende hemden en sarcastische opmerkingen (‘Later’). Elio, een zeventienjarige die de wereld nog volop aan het ontdekken is, weet dat hij Oliver onmiddellijk zal haten. Maar toch ontstaat tussen de twee heren een vriendschap. Ze spenderen heel veel tijd samen aan het zwembad, fietsend naar en van het dorp door het Italiaanse landschap en met fanatieke tenniswedstrijden. Hoewel ze initieel allebei afstand van elkaar houden, groeien ze toch heel dicht naar elkaar toe, zeker als Elio beseft dat hij ernaar verlangt om dichter bij Oliver te zijn. Terwijl de zomer ongenadig verder kruipt en de tijd dat ze samen kunnen zijn korter wordt, ontstaat er tussen de twee een intense en intieme relatie.

In 2017 kwam ‘Call me by your name’ op mijn pad toen de verfilming van het boek van André Aciman met Timothée Chalamet en Armie Hammer in de bioscoop kwam. Daardoor werd ik onmiddellijk verliefd op het verhaal van Elio en Oliver en las ik ook kort erna het boek. Dus toen ik hoorde dat van het verhaal ook een graphic novel zou verschijnen was ik opgetogen… en toen kwam ik voor het eerst in contact met Sarah Maxwells kunst…

En als ik het woord ‘kunst’ gebruik, dan meen ik dat ook echt. Wie het boek las of de film zag, weet dat het verhaal vol verlangen en intimiteit hangt. Om dit dan over te zetten naar een graphic novel kan geen makkelijke opdracht zijn geweest. Maar de illustraties (de kunst) van Sarah Maxwell doet je mee verlangen naar de Italiaanse zon, de zwetende lijven van Elio en Oliver, de smaak van perzikken en de zwoele aantrekkingskracht tussen beide jongens. Elke pagina van deze graphic novel is doorspekt met dit verlangen, met die hete lucht die de zomer met zich meebrengt en de dromen die hete nachten voortbrengen.

Voor wie het verhaal nog niet kent is deze graphic novel zeker een mooie instapper om daarna het boek en de film ook te ontdekken. Voor wie de film en het boek al kenden (keken/lazen) is deze graphic novel een mooie aanvulling aan een reeds geweldig parcours dat het verhaal tussen de twee hoofdpersonages hebben afgelegd. ‘Call me by your name’ is in al zijn vormen een echte aanrader, maar deze graphic novel zou bij iedereen op de salontafel of boekenkast moeten bijgezet worden!

Every summer, an American student stays at the villa on the Italian Riviera at the invitation of Elio’s father. One summer, sometime in the early eighties, Oliver arrives, with his flowing shirts and sarcastic remarks (“Later”). Elio, a seventeen-year-old who is still discovering the world around him, knows that he is going to hate Oliver immediately. And yet, a friendship develops between the two of them. They spend a great deal of time together by the pool, cycling to and from the village through the Italian countryside, and engaging in fiercely competitive tennis matches. Although they initially keep their distance from one another, they gradually grow very close, especially when Elio realises that he longs to be closer to Oliver. As the summer relentlessly moves on and the time they have together grows shorter, an intense and intimate relationship develops between the two of them.

In 2017, Call Me by Your Name came into my life when the film adaptation of André Aciman’s novel, starring Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer, hit cinemas. I immediately fell in love with Elio and Oliver’s story and read the book shortly afterwards as well. So, when I heard that the story was also going to be released as a graphic novel, I was thrilled… and that was when I first discovered Sarah Maxwell’s artwork…

And when I use the word “art”, I truly mean it. Anyone who has read the book or seen the film knows that the story is filled with longing and intimacy. Translating all of that into a graphic novel cannot have been an easy task. Yet Sarah Maxwell’s illustrations (or rather, her art) makes you long for the Italian sun, the sweaty bodies of Elio and Oliver, the taste of peaches, and the sultry attraction between the two boys. Every page of this graphic novel is infused with that longing, with the hot air that summer brings and the dreams that warm nights inspire.

For those who are not yet familiar with the story, this graphic novel is certainly a wonderful introduction, after which you can discover the book and the film as well. For those who already know the film and the book, this graphic novel is a beautiful addition to an already incredible journey that the story of these two main characters has taken us on. Call Me by Your Name is highly recommended in all its forms, but this graphic novel deserves a place on everyone’s coffee table or bookshelf!
