Forever

It’s finally here, or should I say: unfortunately… because this is the final Heartstopper comic… ever! Heartbreak, love, Paris, family issues, mental illness and struggling with who you are, the first ‘I love you’, the first time sex… it’s all part of the Heartstopper world and as we saw the family grow, we mostly witnessed two boys meeting, falling in love, coming out and growing stronger. So it is time for the final chapter…

After all Nick and Charlie have been through, they survived and are the happiest couple. Everyone at school is talking about Nick and Charlie and how they are the perfect couple. But even a happy couple can have struggles. They’ve been through the process of falling in love, having to understand their own sexuality, eating disorders and mental health issues, overcoming their first kiss ànd the first time sharing the bed together, dealing with homophobia and family issues but after all this there’s still one more hurdle: will they survive a long-distance relationship when Nick goes to university as he’s planning to go to Leeds uni, about a four hours drive away? While Nick has to deal with this, Charlie has finally found a new purpose (apart from his drumming in ‘Queer Intentions’) as the new school’s Head Boy and he has big ambitions, if only the headmaster was willing to go along with his ideas. He wants to make the school inclusive for everyone and create a Pride Club. Thanks to the help from Mr. Farouk, he might be able to fulfill that dream. Will Nick and Charlie overcome their new struggle and will their love last forever while their friends all find their own way and new paths along the way?

This final volume in the Heartstopper comics is as sweet, heartbreaking, heartwarming and lovingly as the previous instalments and will speak to a lot of generations. My generation (somewhere between boomer and millennial) who had never any real representation of our community on television or in literature (not the right representation anyway) are the generation that envy Gen-Z en Gen-Alpha because they do have these books and comics. But we can profit from the stories as much as anyone else. Publishers really need to know how important these stories are for people, especially youngsters, who question themselves, struggle with their sexuality and suffer from anxiety, mental health problems or even suicidal thoughts simply because they cannot be who they are. Being part of the lgbtqia-plus community, being an ally, being different from the mainstream and ‘socially accepted’ image of who you should be according to those that think they have the right to change you and ban books because of these themes, should be put in a positive light, should be shown no matter what people say or do! Never yield to those who want to silence us.

And that is why ‘Heartstopper’ (and many many many other queer themed books) are so important for people, to educate, to show we exist. Thank you Alice Oseman and your fellow writers. We are forever in debt for the stories you tell!

I wrote it in my first review and I will repeat it in my final review for Heartstopper: Be more like Alice Oseman and less like people such as J.K. Rowling! they are why pride still exist! (Them and the people who dare attack us: physically and mentally!)

I closed this issue with a tear in my eye. But I will revisit Heartstopper many times in the future, I’m sure. And for those who can’t get enough, the universe of Heartstopper has three more books that add more to the story: Solitaire, This Winter and Nick and Charlie. And of course, there’s the Netflix tv-series with Kit Connor and Joe Locke and the movie based on this volume (although it expanded a little bit on the story in this comic): Heartstopper Forever.
