At the Movies January 2026

From now on I will post a separate movies wrap-up post every month. This way I have a means of exploring and expanding my love for movies a bit more. I will not really write reviews but I will give a rating to the movies I watched… let’s see which movies I watched this first month of 2026!

Wicked

I give this movie an 8,5/10. It expands on the lore created by Frank L. Baum’s Wizard of Oz. The movie (and its sequel Wicked: for good (2025) are based on the book written by Gregory Maguire and the stage musical. Cynthia Erivo (as Elphaba) is amazing in this movie and the song ‘Defying gravity’ is thé perfect musical song!

Tron: Ares

This is an 8/10 for me. I love the Tron movies, especially its predecessor Tron: Legacy (with the amazing soundtrack by Daft Punk!). This movie brings a whole new storyline to the Tron lore. Leto is hated by a lot of folks but to be honest, he killed the part of Ares! I do hope another sequel comes (even though Disney has said they will probably not venture into another story, pity)!

Godzilla

Rewatching Emmerich’s take on the Japanese giant monster Gojira (aka Godzilla) is a bit of a guilty pleasure of mine to be honest. Last year I rewatched the Godzilla and Kong movies, this time I will add this Godzilla and Peter Jackson’s King Kong (remake) to the list. Still today this movies receives a solid 8/10 (even though it is not the best Godzilla movie and takes a lot of inspiration of Jurassic Park).

Nosferatu

Finally I got to see Eggers’ Nosferatu and I was not disappointed. This movie is the best Dracula adaptation (even though the original and this sequel will not be called such to avoid the rights to the novel adaptation). Gothic horror is back with movies like ‘The Last Voyage of the Demeter’, ‘Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein’ and this remake. Everyone in this movie, especially Bill Skarsgard and Lilly-Rose Depp are amazing in it! Also Eggers direction makes it near perfect. This one gets a 9.5/10 from me. (bordering on a 10/10)

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (Extended Edition)

It was about time that I got to rewatching the Lord of the Rings trilogy after all this time. This year the first movie celebrates its 25th anniversary so it was the perfect time to have a seat for a few hours. This has to be the best trilogy ever made, to be honest! Jackson’s directing, the adaptation of Tolkien’s always seemed impossible until we finally got this trilogy! 10/10

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (Extended Edition)

And once you start, you just can’t stop. So I immediately watched the second part as well! 10/10

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (Extended Edition)

And finished off with part 3 of the trilogy! This is the darkest but also the most epic of the three. Over four hours of storytelling in this extended edition, but not a single minute feels too much! Amazing movies! 10/10

Delirium

A surprisingly good movie about not knowing what you see is really there or not and finding out past family secrets.

Speak no Evil

A remake of a Danish/Dutch thriller (with a different ending). Great performance by James McAvoy! Edge-of-your-seat thriller!

Jurassic World: Rebirth

Rewatching this after I’ve seen it in the cinema last Summer. And it won’t be the last time I will watch this movie! despite the hate it may get I love every single minute of this movie! My favourite movie franchise of which I can never get enough. So when is a sequel due?

Avatar

Rewatching Avatar fifteen years or so after I first saw it. Amusing, stunning visuals, allegorical to how humans treat(ed) indigenous people… but not the most memorable movie Cameron ever made. I rewatched it now because I want to see the sequels (Way of Water and Fire and Ash).

Stranger Things: One last Adventure – The making of season 5

Having seen the tv-show and absolutely loving it, it was only normal that I watched this beautifully made ‘making of’ as well.

The Rip

This was recommended by almost everyone on Netflix as it was the number one movie for two weeks now. I needed a little time to get into the story but not a bad movie at all. A lot of action, surprise plot twists (although somehow I saw through some of them). It was great to see Damon and Affleck back together in an action movie.

Transformers One

My first animated Transformers movie and I think it’s an absolute masterpiece! This is how an origin story is done using a lore that was scripted long before this movie came out!

Geostorm

Rewatching this every some years because I think this is actually a very underrated disaster movie. If you haven’t given it a chance, please do!

Star Wars, episode 1: The Phantom Menace

2026 will be the year I want to rewatch every Star wars movie ánd tv-show on Disney+, something I meant to do for a very long time now. I will not mention the series in any wrap-up, only the movies.

The Parenting

A fun queer horror movie about meeting the parents in a haunted house. Better than I expected. More a comedy than a horror movie but it has some great scenes with a surprising plot twist.
