Review:

Robert Hunter has had some vicious and really bad adversaries to compete with. But in this sixth novel in the series his nemesis is by far the worst so far and it is more personal than it has ever been before.

A freak accident reveals a gruesome discovery in the trunk of a car in a car park by a diner. The local sheriff and his deputy manage to arrest a suspect. The apprehended man is brought to the FBI in Quantico where he is put in a cell and only wants to speak to one man, LAPD detective Robert Hunter. Hunter, who just planned a much deserved vacation to Hawaii, has no other choice than to comply because the man accused of some atrocious acts is a friend of Hunter, a roommate in college, a once best friend he lost contact with! Lucien Folter starts talking the moment Robert enters Quantico en faces his old friend, who claims to have been framed and never knew about the contents of his car’s boot. Apparently, after much investigating it appears a serial killer has been kidnapping and killing people for the past twenty-five years and Lucien is only a pawn in the game of this horrendous killer. It is now up to Robert and Special Agent Taylor to find out where the truth lies and whether they got the wrong man or the right one. But the truth may be far more gruesome than Robert or anyone else could imagine and before they know it, they are up against a foe that has them in a vice and Hunter and the FBI are suddenly fighting in a race against time. And then Hunter discovers that this killer has a link to a personal case of him, one that changed Hunter’s life forever and is the reason that he still suffers from insomnia!

This book differs somewhat from the previous ones in Carter’s oeuvre so far. First of all, there’s no sign of Garcia in this one. Hunter has to work together with the FBI and an unlikely, almost impossible ally. Secondly, this book is based upon a case Chris Carter himself has worked on during his years as a criminal behaviour psychologist (forensic psychologist?) and the characters in this book and events are based on real events! Knowing this and reading the book, it poses the question what in this book and the killer’s mind and victims actually happened and how cruel and gruesome the images must have been that Carter and his colleagues came upon in real life!

As I said before, Carter knows how to up the ante with every book he has written so far and I think he has only scratched a surface of the cesspool that is the human deprivaty. The question in this book is also: “Is everyone capable of murdering someone? Even in a passionate way, can someone be urged or driven to the ultimate crime?” And without answering the question for you, maybe everyone should ask himself that same question?

As always I am very much in awe of Carter’s writing (even more so after having met the man in person) and I am more than willing, more than looking forward, to reading more of his twisted little mind and his following books!

The good news is, this book will be translated in Dutch and will be published this Summer (July 2nd 2024) so for the fans who can’t wait, just a little more patience! And I have been told by the publisher that they will continue to translate and publish his other novels as well! And in a few weeks his latest book in his series, The Death Watcher, is out as well! So get that money ready to spend it!!!

‘De Beste Vriend’ is Carters zesde boek in zijn Robert Hunter reeks en hoewel het pas deze zomer verschijnt wil ik reeds een kleine recensie schrijven, om jullie al wat te verlekkeren op wat komen zal!

Als na een ongeval op de parking van een wegrestaurant de sheriff en zijn ‘deputy’ in de koffer van een getroffen wagen toevallig een gruwelijke ontdekking doen, blijkt dit het begin te zijn van een reeks aan bekentenissen en doden die gevonden worden. De chauffeur van de wagen waarin de gruwelijke ontdekking werd gedaan wordt gevangen genomen en aan de FBI in Quantico overgeleverd. Daar zwijgt de man, Liam Shaw, in alle talen. Enkel aan één man wil hij zijn verhaal doen: aan LAPD rechercheur Robert Hunter. Deze staat net op het punt op een welverdiende reis naar Hawaii te vertrekken maar de FBI steekt hier een stokje voor.

Als hij voor de gearresteerde komt te zitten blijkt Shaw een alias te zijn en zit voor hem zijn oude studie- en kamergenoot Lucien Folter. Deze vertelt het verhaal dat hij een pion is in een zaak waarbij leugens en misleiding zijn deel uitmaken en hij beweert er in geluisd te worden. Hij stuurt Hunter en een FBI agente Taylor op pad om bewijs hiervoor te vinden. Maar Hunter merkt algauw dat hij op zoek moet naar een seriemoordenaar die al vijfentwintig jaar aan de gang is en die ook nog eens een heel persoonlijke link heeft met een aantal mensen uit zijn verleden.

Het boek slaat een andere toon aan dan de voorgaande delen in de reeks. Enerzijds omdat Hunter het zonder zijn vaste partner Garcia moet doen, hij ook niet in zijn vertrouwde omgeving moet werken maar ook dat het een heel persoonlijke zaak is. En dit boek is dan ook nog eens gebaseerd op een echte zaak waaraan Chris Carter heeft gewerkt in zijn dagen als Crimineel Forensisch Psycholoog. En dat maakt de gruwel in dit boek nog veel intenser. Je vraagt je bij het lezen van ‘De Beste Vriend’ dan ook constant af: wat is er effectief uit het echte leven gegrepen en hoever kan een mens gaan in het moorden?

En het boek stelt ook nog eens een heel belangrijke vraag: ‘Is iedereen in staat om te moorden? Kan iedereen zover gedreven worden dat zij toch de ultieme misdaad zouden overgaan?’

Hopelijk heb ik hiermee jullie interesse gewekt en hoop ik dat jullie allemaal Chris Carters boek dan ook zullen kopen/lezen want de fans zullen keihard smullen van dit heerlijk gruwelijke misdaadboek!
