Review:
The latest in the Mission: Impossible series, again with Tom Cruise as the main character Ethan Hunt and some recurring characters such as Ilsa Faust, Luther and Benji and 27 years after the first M:I movie Henry Czerny is back as well, playing his role as Kittridge again.
Newcomers are Pom Klementieff as a deadly assassin and the main antagonist is played by Esai Morales. And then there are two Agent Carter alumni: Agent Carter herself, Hayley Atwell playing very skilfully as a thief and Shea Whigham who is a CIA agent hunting Hunt and his team.
This movie is all about an A.I. program, the sentient The Entity that is set loose. The only way to stop it is by getting a key, which is divided in two parts, so Hunt’s team have their hands full getting those two keys. While trying to get those their work is made more difficult by being chased by the CIA, by a thief who gets her hands on one part of the key and by someone from Hunt’s past who isn’t afraid to kill. And they don’t know what they key is used for or where they can use it although that might prove to be the hardest challenge yet!
This is part 1 of the final Mission:Impossible movies (I think) with Top Cruise (admit it, the man is over sixty… the role of Hunt is becoming somewhat daunting and too physical… though if they can convince an eighty year old Harrison Ford to do another Indiana Jones… who knows)
As with the previous instalment, Fallout, on first viewing I wasn’t too convinced of the story and though the action scenes are great and the filming of McQuarrie is top work, there are not enough big action scenes in this movie. I guess they are keeping the bedt for last…
The beginning of the movie was also pretty weird at first… I think I will need another viewing and the final part to be truly convinced of its genius… as with Fallout!
I am not a huge fan of the cliffhanger kind of splitting movies in two parts and wait two years to release the next movie… (Fast X had the same problem in my opinion) so maybe Hollywood should stop doing that!
The best actress in the movie was Atwell. She should get her own spinoff movie to be honest! (And more Agent Carter!)
And of course… the use of A.I. is something very ‘now’ so I am curious where they’ll take the story from here on out ànd what will become of the franchise after Dead Reckoning part 2!?
