Dit is de tweede thriller van Sam Holland, na ‘De Echoman’ die vorig jaar verscheen. Ook in dit boek volgen we de afdeling Zware Misdaden maar deze keer zijn het andere rechercheurs die een zaak voorgeschoteld krijgen. En het is er eentje waar ze hun tanden redelijk op stuk bijten.

Alles begint met de vondst van een lijk op een vuilnisbelt. Naast het lijk staat een Romeins cijfer waaruit ze kunnen afleiden dat er nog andere slachtoffers zijn. En inderdaad, op diezelfde hoop vinden ze nog een aantal doden, elk met hun eigen cijfer.

Rechercheur Adam Bishop en zijn ‘second in command’ Jamie Hoxton moeten op zoek gaan naar een onvoorspelbare, ongrijpbare en creatieve moordenaar die onstopbaar blijkt te zijn.

Dr. Romilly Cole, Adams ex-vrouw, hoort van de zaak af en denkt te weten wie verantwoordelijk is voor deze moorden. Maar niemand gelooft haar. Want haar vader, die jaren ervoor gelijkaardige moorden pleegde, zit in de gevangenis en kan deze serie nieuwe moorden niet hebben uitgevoerd. Maar ze is ervan overtuigd dat er een link is want toen zij haar vader destijds verraadde had ze in zijn ‘dodenkamer’ het Romeinse cijfer XX (twintig) in de muur gekrast zien staan. Iemand zet dus het werk van Elijah Cole gewoon verder.

De zaak escaleert en de moorden worden persoonlijker en Adam, Jamie en Romilly racen tegen de klok om ervoor te zorgen dat de moordenaar niet tot aan het cijfer één geraakt!

Dit is een heerlijke spannende en gruwelijke nieuwe thriller van één van mijn nieuwe favoriete auteurs, Sam Holland! Haar schrijfstijl en opbouw van haar verhalen zijn zo goed dat je het boek met moeite opzij kan en wil leggen! Je zou er letterlijk je slaap voor laten!

Hoewel dit verhaal met geheel nieuwe personages is dan het voorgaande boek in de ‘Major Crimes’ reeks, toch is er een link tussen beide. En ik heb het uit goed bron, Sam Holland zelf, dat de volgende twee boeken dit nog verder zullen uitspitten en de personages nog meer met elkaar zullen in contact komen. Ik kan alvast niet wachten op deel 3! (Update: intussen weten de dat het volgende deel in de zomer van 2024 verschijnt met als titel ‘De Poppenmeester’)

Sam Holland had proven herself as being a splendid and wonderful writer of a great thriller last year when ‘The Echoman’ was released.

Now she’s back with ‘The Twenty’, the second book in the ‘Major Crimes’ series. And although it is part of a grander scheme, part of a series, it does not have the same characters from the previous book, although there is a link! But a little birdy, called Sam Holland, told me that in the next two books the characters will interact more with each other.

When DCI Adam Bishop and DS Jamie Hoxton are called to a scene where a body is found dead, they never would expect the serious case they would get mixed up in. Next to the body a roman numeral is found, leading them to think more bodies might turn up. And yes, at the same crime scene they find a few more of these numerals ànd a corresponding body.

Adam’s ex-wife Romilly Cole is in therapy for something that happened years ago, something that according to her is connected to this new case. But the police, Adam in particular, does not believe her. Her father, Elijah Cole, killed a few women when she was younger. She called the police on him and they found the bodies of four women and one survivor. Romilly saw the numeral number XX, twenty, scratched into the wall where the girls were kept hostage, making her believe someone else is trying to finish his work. He himself can’t do it because he is incarcerated.

Before anyone understands what happens the case turns against them all and starts getting very personal. The elusive, immoral, unstoppable, creative and unpredictable killer keeps adding bodies to the count and it’s the police’s job, with the help from Romilly, to stop him before he gets to ‘one’!

With the right amount of twists and turns and gore and tension, we are witnessing Holland’s talent of keeping us awake and not being able to put the book down (leading to some sleepless nights), it’s that good! I am already a huge fan of this writer and I cannot wait for book 3 to come out!

Sam also has the ability to keep us guessing and thinking we got it all figured out but in the end we are all just flabbergasted by how inventive she turns the story around! Great job!

The Twenty has all the hallmarks from a good thriller such as Seven, Prodigal Son, Mindhunter and even a bit of Saw in there!
