Review:
So, I watched this movie on Netflix last weekend (actually started the weekend before that but wasn’t in the right mind for it so we watched it in two parts) and I was completely, utterly, enormously… underwhelmed… seriously!
I had seen other stuff Campion made before so I was aware she’s a storyteller and does this in a very slow and good way but it just didn’t work for me with this movie!
Slow, dragging and not a big story to tell… (I do plan on reading the book on which it was based but I hope it’s better than the adaptation) and to be honest, most actors just didn’t really play all that well…
I expected Dunst to shine but she’s just a mess in this one. Plemons, absent for a big part of the movie, plays Dunst’s husband and that’s it. The only two actors having a great role don’t even shine either. Cumberbatch as a bad guy… naah, it doesn’t add up. Kodi Smit-McPhee was actually the best actor in this movie. He brought the only talent…
This is not a great movie, unfortunately. And I understand why it did not win best picture at the Oscars. An easy-to-forget movie, is what I call it.
