Bezitterig

Twee maanden na de moord op Amanda in Åre is Hanna Ahlander nog steeds aan het werk in het skioord. Het oord is druk met toeristen die komen skieën, Hanna krijgt haar leven beetje bij beetje terug op orde na de breuk met haar partner en ze kan nog steeds het vakantiehuis van haar zus gebruiken als woonst. Maar rechercheur Daniel Lindskog heeft het daarentegen lastiger om zijn werkleven te blijven balanceren met zijn privéleven, zeker met een pasgeboren dochter die veel aandacht eist. Hanna en Daniel kunnen het echter goed met elkaar vinden en werken als een perfect duo samen. En dat zal nodig zijn want in dit tweede boek wordt opnieuw een lijk gevonden dat hun voor een uitdaging zal stellen.

Als het lichaam van Johan Andersson, voormalig olympisch skiër, onder de sneeuw wordt teruggevonden wordt onmiddellijk een onderzoek ingesteld. Het verminkte lijk van Johan wordt vastgebonden teruggevonden dus het is onmiddellijk duidelijk dat er sprake is van een moordzaak. De ogen richten zich redelijk snel naar zijn zakenpartner, Linus Sundin, met wie Johan een loodgieterszaak uitbaatte. Maar de zaken gingen niet meer goed, onder andere door Linus’ drankzucht die een grote rol speelde.

Terwijl Hanna, Daniel en het team in Åre de zaak onderzoekt, ondergaat Rebecka Ekvall, die in een gesloten religieuze sekte opgroeit, de grootste emotionele schommelingen als blijkt dat ze een groot, maar mogelijks noodlottig geheim met zich meedraagt. Haar echtgenoot, de nieuwe predikant van de sekte, Ole Nordhammer, blijkt een bezitterige en gewelddadige kant te hebben, in een gemeenschap waar vrouwen sowieso al weinig te zeggen hebben. Zij raakt volledig geïsoleerd en niemand gelooft haar of wil ingrijpen.

Ondertussen heeft Anton, die samenwerkt met Hanna en Daniel, zijn eigen geheim als hij een relatie aangaat met de beste vriend van het slachtoffer.

Terwijl de rechercheurs de zaak uitspitten komen ze in een web van jaloezie en wraak terecht en stopt het lijstje met doden jammer genoeg daar niet.

Net als in het eerste deel van deze reeks schrijft Viveca Sten een heerlijk donkere thriller waarin een gruwelijke zaak dient opgelost te worden maar waarin we ook de hoofdpersonages zelf beter leren kennen. Hanna’s verleden als inspecteur bij de dienst ‘Huiselijk geweld’ helpt ook in dit verhaal en de problemen die Daniel heeft om een goede work-life-balance te vinden zal voor heel wat mensen herkenbaar zijn. Dit is opnieuw een vlotlezende thriller vol spanning en momenten waarbij je echt op het puntje van je stoel zit. Deel drie van de reeks ligt ondertussen ook al klaar dus ik duik daar binnenkort ook in.

Voor wie de tv-serie Åremorden wil bekijken, de laatste twee afleveringen van het eerste seizoen zijn gebaseerd op dit boek maar het verhaal wijkt heel erg af van dit boek (het boek is beter!!!).

The Åre Murders: Hidden in Shadows

Two months after the murder of Amanda in Åre, Hanna Ahlander is still working in the ski resort. The town is busy with tourists who have come to ski, and Hanna is gradually getting her life back on track after breaking up with her partner. She is also still able to live in her sister’s holiday home. Detective Daniel Lindskog, on the other hand, finds it more difficult to balance his professional life with his private life, especially with a newborn daughter who demands a lot of attention. Nevertheless, Hanna and Daniel get along well and work together as a perfect duo. And that will be necessary, because in this second book another body is found that will present them with a serious challenge.

When the body of Johan Andersson, a former Olympic skier, is discovered under the snow, an investigation is immediately launched. Johan’s mutilated body is found tied up, making it instantly clear that this is a murder case. Suspicion quickly falls on his business partner, Linus Sundin, with whom Johan ran a plumbing company. However, the business had not been doing well, partly due to Linus’s alcoholism, which played a major role.

While Hanna, Daniel, and the team in Åre investigate the case, Rebecka Ekvall—who grew up in a closed religious sect—goes through intense emotional turmoil when it becomes clear that she is carrying a major, possibly fatal secret. Her husband, Ole Nordhammer, the sect’s new preacher, turns out to have a possessive and violent side in a community where women already have very little say. She becomes completely isolated, and no one believes her or is willing to intervene.

Meanwhile, Anton, who works alongside Hanna and Daniel, has a secret of his own when he starts a relationship with the victim’s best friend.

As the detectives dig deeper into the case, they become entangled in a web of jealousy and revenge, and unfortunately the list of deaths does not end there.

Just like in the first installment of the series, Viveca Sten delivers a wonderfully dark thriller in which a gruesome case must be solved, while also allowing us to get to know the main characters better. Hanna’s past as an inspector in the Domestic Violence Unit once again proves useful, and Daniel’s struggle to achieve a healthy work-life balance will feel familiar to many readers. This is another fast-paced, suspenseful thriller, packed with tension and edge-of-your-seat moments. The third part of the series is already waiting, so I’ll be diving into that soon as well.

For those who want to watch the TV series Åremorden: the last two episodes of the first season are based on this book, but the story differs significantly from the novel (the book is better!!!).
