Hulda’s oude zaken

Rechercheur Hulda Hermansdóttir wordt gevraagd om naar het eiland Elliðaey te komen waar vier vrienden na tien jaar elkaar terug ontmoeten maar één van hen wordt dood aangetroffen. Hulda ontdekt dat er gelijkenissen zijn met een moord op een meisje tien jaar voordien toen een jonge vrouw dood werd aangetroffen in een zomerhutje in de Westfjorden.

Bij de ondervraging van de drie anderen voelt ze aan dat er dingen verzwegen worden en dat er geheimen zijn die niet aan het licht mogen komen maar Hulda laat zich niet zomaar afschepen. Tegelijkertijd moet ze ook opboksen tegen een vrouwonvriendelijke werkomgeving die ervoor zorgt dat haar werk er ook niet makkelijker op wordt gemaakt. En Hulda heeft ook andere demonen waar ze tegen moet vechten, de dood van haar dochter en haar man. Des te gedreven is ze om deze zaak tot een goed einde te brengen en de moordenaar te ontmaskeren.

Wie intussen al enkele boeken van Ragnar Jónasson las weet dat het stuk voor stuk thriller zijn die je meesleuren in de desolate landschappen en de donkere dagen van Ijsland, een prachtig eiland. Daarnaast speelt het afgelegen en haast onbereikbare eilandje Elliðaey ook een grote rol en dat creëert nog een extra claustrofobisch sfeertje tot het ganse verhaal.

Het is uitkijken naar de twee volgende thrillers in de reeks rond Hulda. Kleine spoiler voor wie ‘De duisternis’, de voorloper van dit boek, nog niet las… De boeken in de reeks na ‘De duisternis’ zijn prequels. Wie ‘De duisternis’ las zal wel begrijpen waarom…

Hulda’s past cases

Detective Hulda Hermansdóttir is asked to travel to the island of Elliðaey, where four friends reunite after ten years, but one of them is found dead. Hulda discovers similarities to a murder from ten years earlier, when a young woman was found dead in a summer cabin in the Westfjords.

During the interrogation of the remaining three, she senses that things are being withheld and that there are secrets that must not come to light—but Hulda is not easily brushed off. At the same time, she has to contend with a male-dominated, misogynistic work environment, which certainly does not make her job any easier. Hulda is also fighting other demons: the deaths of her daughter and her husband. All of this only strengthens her determination to see the case through to the end and unmask the murderer.

Anyone who has already read several books by Ragnar Jónasson knows that they are, without exception, thrillers that pull you into the desolate landscapes and dark days of Iceland—a beautiful island. In addition, the remote and almost inaccessible island of Elliðaey plays a major role, creating an extra layer of claustrophobic atmosphere throughout the entire story.
