Een royale taak

William Warwick is intussen al aan zijn vijfde avontuur en deze keer mogen hij en zijn team zich in koninklijke kringen begeven. Want nadat de kroonprinses Lady Di het politiemuseum heeft bezocht komt hoofdinspecteur Warwick met de innemende vrouw in contact. Als kort daarna de ‘Hawk’ het team de opdracht geeft om een onderzoek te doen naar het Royalty Protection Command omdat er vermoedens zijn van gesjoemel en sabotage, staat voor Scotland Yard en Warwicks team een moeilijke taak te wachten. Samen met enkele leden infiltreren ze in het RPC terwijl Ross Hogan zal instaan voor de bescherming van ‘the people’s princess’.

Dat William op datzelfde moment ook nog eens moeten kampen met Booth Watson en de intussen terug gevangen genomen Miles Faulkner zorgt voor nog meer werk en spanning. Want ook Willams vrouw, Beth, merkt de gevolgen van deze zaak. Nadat ze gepasseerd werd voor een hoge functie in het Fitzmolean Museum, beslist ze dan maar op eigen houtje te gaan werken. En daarbij krijgt ze steun van Miles’ ex-vrouw, Christina Faulkner. Maar kan ze Christina wel helemaal vertrouwen?

En de advocaat Booth Watson smeedt op datzelfde moment ook plannen om ervandoor te kunnen gaan met Faulkners fortuinen en kunstcollectie. Maar Miles heeft nog wel enkele trucjes achter de hand om dit te voorkomen.

Dit is en blijft een geweldige serie. Warwick verscheen eerst ooit als een nevenpersonage in de Clifton-reeks. Nadat heel wat lezers meer wouden te weten komen over William Warwick besloot Jeffrey Archer deze spinoff serie te schrijven waarin hij dieper in het verleden dook van het hoofdpersonage. Warwick is een familieman en een gedreven inspecteur die zich wist op te werken in de hiërarchie van het politieapparaat van Londen. Gedurende de reeks komt hij heel wat sluwe en machtige tegenstanders tegen, maar zijn grootste vijand is Miles Faulkner die hem steeds te snel weet af te zijn of dat toch probeert, met de hulp van zijn nog sluwere advocaat BW.

Ook deze keer zien we hoe William en zijn team van agenten en inspecteurs zich volledig inzetten om de veiligheid van de destijds enorm populaire Britse kroonprinses en de rest van de koninklijke familie te behoeden voor heel wat onheil en misbruik.

De boeken lezen niet alleen als een nostalgische trip naar de jaren tachtig maar eveneens naar een periode waarin er veel respect was voor het koningshuis, mede dankzij de populariteit van Lady Di. Het verhaal dat Archer neerpende is helemaal fictie dus heel wat van de gebeurtenissen zijn veranderd of zijn nooit gebeurd. Het is eigenlijk een beetje zoals ‘The Crown’, de geweldige Netflix serie rond het Britse koningshuis.

Ik raad deze reeks (The Crown ook maar nu heb ik het over de William Warwick verhalen) aan als je houdt van een vleugje nostalgie, kat-en-muisspelletjes, een snel lezende reeks met heel wat grappige maar vooral spannende momenten! In deze reeks verschenen nog drie boeken dus ik hoop heel snel de Nederlandse vertalingen van die overige drie boeken te mogen zien verschijnen. Een grote aanrader!

This series remains utterly compelling. Warwick first appeared as a minor character in the Clifton series, but when readers wanted more, Jeffrey Archer created this spin-off to explore Warwick’s past in depth. Warwick is a family man and a determined inspector who has risen through the ranks of London’s police force. Over the course of the series, he faces clever and powerful adversaries, yet his greatest nemesis remains Miles Faulkner, always seemingly one step ahead—or trying to be—with the aid of his equally devious lawyer, BW.

Once again, Warwick and his team are fully committed to protecting the then-enormously popular British Crown Princess and the royal family from countless threats. The books offer not only a nostalgic trip back to the 1980s but also a glimpse into a time when the monarchy commanded great respect, in no small part thanks to Lady Di’s enduring popularity. Archer’s tale is entirely fictional, with events adapted or imagined, much like The Crown, the acclaimed Netflix series about the British royal family.

I wholeheartedly recommend this series for anyone who enjoys a touch of nostalgia, clever cat-and-mouse games, fast-paced storytelling, and a perfect mix of humour and suspense. With three more books in the series yet to come, I’m eagerly awaiting the Dutch translations of the remaining volumes. A definite must-read!
