Review:
After the events of ‘Godzilla vs Kong’, we see Kong living his live in Hollow Earth, the place they discovered in the previous movie where unknown and prehistoric creatures live. While Kong has his own battles, he is wounded and needs help. Help he can only get by going to Earth.
Monarch, the organisation that monitors the titans like Godzilla and now also Kong and Hollow Earth, is being threatened to be taken over by the government. At the same time they see a surge in Titan activity to which Godzilla reacts. He seems to build up power for an upcoming clash.
Kong in the meantime went back to Hollow Earth, followed by a team and the only human being who can communicate with Kong, Jia. He encounters a bunch of apes, with a Baby Kong. That Baby Kong leads him to a cave with other apes and a ruthless Titan, Skar King. Skar King has control over the apes and another Titan, Shimo who uses ice as a weapon.
Kong will need help from the most unexpected Titan, from humans and the Iwi tribe that lives in the Hollow Earth. If they don’t succeed, Skar King will reach the surface and destroy everything!
After Godzilla vs Kong, this was another movie in the Monsterverse directed by Adam Wingard. It offered some questions about Godzilla in previous movies: why was he frozen in ‘Godzilla, King Of the Monsters’, what happened to Mothra after her encounter/fight with Ghidorah and what happened to Kong after he was left in the Hollow Earth.
This movie centred more on Kong, has the most Titans seen in a single movie and I read they wanted to make a movie that has the same vibe of an eighties hero movie and toys line, like G.I. Joe, Thundercats and it even has some Transformers elements as well (Kong gets a little upgrade thanks to Monarch).
Dan Stevens is also a mix between Michael Douglas in Romancing the Stone/Jewel of the Nile and Kurt Russell in Big Trouble in little China (and with the shirt of Magnum from Magnum P.I.). A few actors from the previous movie return (Rebecca Hall as Ilene Andrews, Brian Tyree Henry as Bernie Hayes -comedic relief in the movie- and Kaylee Hottle as Jia.
Notice also that the title changed from Godzilla VS Kong to Godzilla X Kong, meaning they don’t need to fight each other this time… but will they be able to pass their old strives?
From what I heard, this will not be the last movie in the series as a new Godzilla x Kong movie is in the works. And I hope to be able to see the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters tv-show someday as well!
