Review:
Jason goes to Space… where no one can hear you scream.
Jason Voorhees has been captured in 2008. And because they don’t know exactly what to do wih the unstoppable evil, scientists decide to freeze him in a cryogenic chamber. But before that can happen mayhem ensues and Jason gets free and starts a killing spree, another one. But one of the scientists, Rowan, gets him into the cryogenic chamber and she freezes him, ending up severely wounded and frozen herself.
Four centuries later, Earth is dead and a wasteland, a research and scavanger team from Earth 2 are looking for resources on Earth One. They find the cryogenic chamber with Jason in it and next to it the frozen, but well preserved, body of Rowan. They take both along with them, not knowing they will unleash a whole new horror onto them.
Rowan is cured, with the help of nanotechnology and revived. She tells the story of Jason Voorhees and his killing nature. In the meantime, Jason is being researched and gets unfrozen, reawakening him! From then on he begins prowling the spaceship (Alien-style) and killing (in some very original ways) the crew. Will they be able to stop him, with Rowan’s help? There’s only one huge problem with killing Jason on a spaceship with nano tech… ÜberJason is created!
Well, this was definitely not the best in the series, also not the worst, but it had some great references to some science fiction movies, especially the Alien series where Jason could be seen as a sort of Xenomorph. Naming the ship ‘Lazarus’ is very apt for this movie! Looking back on this movie, you can clearly see the special effects were from the early 2000’s and didn’t have the biggest budget. But this movie has earned a fanbase by now and I can understand why even though I wasn’t overly enthusiastic about it. I did like some of the kills however (using liquid nitrogen is always a great idea to use as a kill method, in my opinion)
The story is very thin, very early 2000’s with a cyborg and then an oversized Jason Voorhees who seems invincible beyond the way he already was. Acting is bad (don’t get me started on the acting!) and it didn’t have a single actor that performed good in this one. Overacting was more like it…
The only great thing about this movie may have been Kane Hodder’s final performance (not that it was the last time he played Jason, but that hé was the one that was Jason!) as Jason Voorhees. He is the best actor to ever play the role!
So to conclude… would I have made a movie that brought Jason in the future, in space, after a lot of other series did that before and failed in making a good movie? No… Did it work out? Kind of, but it needed a better story and better actors and of course, better special effects. (this was the same time The Lord of the Rings was released and look at what Peter Jackson created!)
The next movie Jason appeared in was Freddy vs Jason, but I will not rewatch that one right now because I did a rewatch and review in 2023 when I did a ‘A Nightmare on Elmstreet Movie Marathon’. (my review can be found on this blog, I’ll post the link below). So the only one remaining now is the reboot from 2009!
