Thomas Diamond had said to Sally: “Put me out with the bins. When I die, put me out with the bins. I’ll be dead, so I won’t know the difference.” So that’s what Sally Diamond did. She put him with the trash and tried to incinerate her (adoptive) father. Little did she know that is not the way it works and when people find out they are shocked. The little Irish town of Roscommon is now all over the news, when it appears that Sally is actually Mary Norton, the daughter of a paedophilic kidnapper, Conor Geary, and his victim Denise Norton. Sally’s world is turned upside down. But at the same time a new complete world is opening up to her. But Sally is strange, naive, introverted and not so world-wise… so she has a lot to learn about the ways things go.

But Conor Geary has left more than a daughter in this world. Someone else, at the other end of the globe, has a connection to the man and Sally! His story however is even worse and more shattering than that of Sally. And are the sins of the father transferred to his children or does nurture change a lot?

And then there’s the question who that strange man is that tries to wriggle his way into her life. What are his motivations and why is he trying to become so close to Sally?

This is a dark, twisted thriller and has become a 2024 favourite in a short amount of time! As dark as the story is, as light the character of Sally is, she is naive but also very endearing and you sympathise with the girl from the start, even though her actions are sometimes weird. But the real darkness in this story comes from the story of how Sally was taken in by the Diamond’s, her mother’s and father’s and of course the rest of this twisted family!

In April 2023 Sara Cox and her guests in the BBC show, ‘Between the Covers’ (season 6, episode 4) this book was talked about and praised and ever since I watched that episode I’ve been wanting to read this book. Thanks to the bookclub Twist and Tale I finally bought it and read it, without a single regret! I even plan on reading ‘Lying in wait’ real soon now that I know I love Liz’ writing so much. (Lucky for me I was given a copy of that book by the Dutch publisher)

Strange Sally Diamond is a true gem, a dark but fun decent into the mind of a dysfunctional family, spread out over the globe! As Sara Cox said: “I just love it so much.”

Sally Diamond is een gekke meid, die doet alsof ze doof is als ze bij mensen is om niet te moeten praten met hen. Ze woont samen met haar vader die haar adopteerde, Thomas, in een klein dorpje Roscommon Town in Ierland. Als Thomas Diamond sterft doet Sally wat hij haar ooit heeft verteld te doen: “Zet me maar bij het afval!” Dus doet Sally wat ze met alle afval doet, ze verbrand het lichaam van haar vader. Tot grote ontsteltenis van het dorpje.

En dan ontstaat er een ganse hetze rond Sally als blijkt dat zij de dochter is van een pedofiele kidnapper, die haar moeder op elfjarige leeftijd ontvoerde en jaren vasthield. Denise en Mary (Sally’s echte naam) Norton kunnen bevrijd worden uit de klauwen van de vreselijke man maar niet zonder dat Conor Geary ontsnapt.

Sally’s wereld opent zich maar haar gebrek aan wereldwijsheid, haar naïviteit en haar introverte karakter spelen haar zeker nog parten. Maar algauw maakt ze vrienden, waaronder ook een plots opgedoken man die zich in haar leven probeert te wringen.

Wat Sally nog niet weet is dat Conor Geary aan de andere kant van de wereld nog sporen heeft nagelaten. En dan rijst de vraag: is opvoeding bepalend of zijn genen de reden dat iemand de acties van diens ouders overneemt?

Dit is een donkere maar vooral een heel fijne thriller om in te verdiepen. Liz Nugents schrijftalent is top en hoewel het niet onmiddellijk een pageturner is, is het wel eentje waar je je niet los van kan trekken ook. Soms moet een boek niet altijd ‘snel’ lezen, vaak is het opsnuiven van de sfeer en de atmosfeer belangrijker.

Hoewel het een donker verhaal is, blijft het ook luchtig genoeg (vooral door Sally Diamonds zijde van het verhaal en haar naïviteit die vaak zorgt voor grappige situaties). Liz zorgt voor een familiekroniek (weliswaar een nogal verdraaide en donkere kroniek) in dit verhaal waarbij ze je ook nog eens geregeld op het verkeerde been durft te zetten.

Ik leerde het boek kennen dankzij een Brits tv-programma dat werd gepresenteerd door Sara Cox, Between the Covers, waar door elke gast die het had gelezen en door de gastvrouw het boek volop werd geprezen voor zijn vindingrijkheid en schrijftalent van Liz. Ik heb alvast ‘In de Schaduw’, een eerder boek van deze Ierse schrijfster, klaarliggen (dankzij uitgeverij AW Bruna) om zo snel mogelijk te lezen. Ik ben alvast fan, net als Sara Cox en vele anderen!
