In the distant future, Evey Hammond is an average citizen of the United Kingdom, which is under the rule of the fascist and tyrannical Norsefire Party. She is an employee of the state-run British Television Network, but soon, she becomes the number one enemy of the state together with an enigmatic and larger-than-life freedom fighter known only by the letter “V”. V informs Evey that she must hide in his underground lair for at least one year, and while she is reluctant to the idea at first, a bond soon forms between the two individuals. In the meanwhile, the mysterious past of V is gradually revealed to the police inspector tasked with capturing him, Eric Finch, and it is not long until he starts questioning everything his government stands for.

Review:

After having read the graphic novel of V for Vendetta, I had to rewatch the movie!

My review for the graphic novel can be read here: https://looneybooks79.blog/2023/09/20/v-for-vendetta/

The story in this movie remains the same as in the comics, although there are some differences made to the outcome. (I won’t spoil that however)

The greatest thing about this movie is the performance of Natalie Portman as Evey and Weaving’s voice (which is perfect for V) although ad I understand it there was someone else playing him (James Purefoy). The best scene in the movie: when Larkhill is on fire and a naked V is out of his cell standing in front of the fire which is literally taken from a cover for one of the issues of the V for Vendetta graphic novel. The music by Dario Marianelli is also super in this movie!

While watching this is kind of frightens me as well because what I see in this story is not impossible in reality and we are in some countries not far off from a dystopian world described here… I sure hope if that ever happens, someone or a few people like V stand up and unleash chaos and anarchy in order to receive some sense of freedom again!

Remember, remember the fifth of November, gunpowder treason and plot; for there is a reason why gunpowder and treason should ne’er be forgot.
