Review:

Wrong answer!

Ghostface

It’s no secret, this is my least favourite Scream movie from the entire franchise. And I think a lot has to do with the fact that A. The movie was plagued with rewrites and B. Kevin Williamson was not back to write the script! The man was too busy so you can’t fault him for that.

Another reason I didn’t like it as much as the previous movies is how little screentime Neve Campbell had in this one. Plus it had too much of a comedic tone instead of a slasher movie.

But… it still is a Scream movie and that’s why I like it! From the original trilogy this one has the most killings (I have a little sadistic streak) and no one is safe in this movie! The movie starts with killing off one of the characters from the previous movie(s) which you’d never suspect.

Then there’s the new rules that are very important, (of course) given by Randy Meeks. Even after his death he still wants his friends to survive their ordeal! And as this is no longer ‘just’ a sequel but the third instalment of a trilogy, the rules change again!

Of course there’s Gale, Dewey and Sidney… in twofold this time as the killer strikes on the set of the movie ‘Stab 3: Return to Woodsboro’, a mediocre sequel to the events of the Woodsboro killings. A pun on Hollywood that loves to make (bad) sequels to successful movies. Especially horror movie franchises like Nightmare on Elmstreet, Chucky, Halloween or Friday the 13th!

So the feel of meta is great but at some point it’s just too much meta… (even the joke with Carrie Fisher was a bit over the top).

Had Williamson written this movie, I’m sure it would have been a better closing chapter of the original trilogy. Unfortunately Kruger (not Freddy!) took over and he hadn’t seen a single Scream movie… then why would you want to write a third instalment if you weren’t prepared? I still don’t get it! They even rewrote the movie so many times they dropped the ‘second killer’ this time… 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️
