Synopsis:

A year after her mother’s death, Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) and her friends started experiencing some strange phone calls. They later learned the calls were coming from a crazed serial killer, in a white faced mask and a large black robe, looking for revenge. His phone calls usually consist of many questions, the main one being: What’s your favorite scary movie? Along with much scary movie trivia, ending with bloody pieces of innocent lives scattered around the small town of Woodsboro.

Review:

“What’s your favourite scary movie?”

Ghostface Killer

If you haven’t seen these movies, you’re a bit of a barbarian, in my opinion. I’m sorry, but it’s true!

This movie was the reason slasher movies suddenly came back to life! After an absence of at least a decade slashers were hot again. And this movie set the bar really high, as not many of the slashers that followed had the same success Scream had. I’m thinking of ‘I know what you did last summer’ or ‘Urban Legend’, and those were pretty successful as well. ‘Valentine’ or ‘Cherry falls’ weren’t…

So Scream became a success, even today it still is as it still spawns some sequels (Scream VI recently released on dvd and bluray, hence why I’m rewatching the entire series).

This movie not only revived Wes Craven’s career, it also introduced the audience to an entire new cast: Skeet Ulrich and Neve Campbell (whom we both knew from The Craft), Matthew Lillard and Rose McGowan and of course David Arquette and his future wife (and ex) Courtney Cox (who was a success due to her role in Friends) but the one that really hit it off due to this film was writer Kevin Williamson. After he wrote this movie he was so wanted… he wrote screenplays for Dawson’s Creek, Teaching Mrs Tingle, I know what you did last Summer, The Faculty and many more…

I remember when this came out I planned on seeing it in theatres but I chose ‘Men in Black’ over it (which was in première when I went to the cinema) but I got a second chance when the third movie was released and I got to see a Scream Marathon at Kinepolis Ghent. Such a great night that was!

I love how meta this movie is as well… the references to ‘A Nightmare on Elmstreet’ (the janitor, played by director Wes Craven, who’s called Fred and has Krueger’ outfit on and Casey’s reference to the sequels never being as good as the original) and the many horror movies referred to (and even shown): Friday the 13th (beware of the major spoiler at the start of Scream for this movie), Halloween (the fun part is: in Halloween H2O we see Scream playing on a tv-screen!), Prom Night and many more… Randy’s rules to survive a horror movie are just great fun but Gale Weathers (Courtney Cox) proved one can survive even by saying: ‘I’ll be right back!’

And not everyone who lost their virginity is meant to die!

These movie are great fun and I rewatch them so much they never bore me!

“I’m feeling a little woozy here!”
