Synopsis:

Twenty-seven years after the hunt for the Ark of the Covenant in Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), and nineteen years after the search for the Holy Grail in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), the brilliant professor of archaeology and intrepid adventurer Dr Indiana Jones is back in action. This time, in 1957, ten years into the Cold War, a cocky, Harley-Davidson-riding young greaser named Mutt Williams enlists Jones’ help to find a long-lost friend. Instead, the challenging mission drags the explorers deep into the impenetrable jungles of Peru and the fabled Lost City of Gold. And as the dangerous quest for the mysterious Crystal Skull of Akator, a pre-Columbian artefact made of diaphanous quartz, unfolds, a murderous squad of Soviets is hot on their trail. But this was only supposed to be a time-sensitive rescue mission, not an adrenaline-charged treasure hunt. Is Indy prepared to expose unfathomable secrets and the ultimate truth?

Review:

Fifteen years ago already we were treated with a new Indiana Jones adventure, almost twenty years after Last Crusade was released. It was hard to step into the footsteps of ‘Crusade’. Denholm Elliott had passed away since then and Sean Connery retired from acting so those two were not coming back. Jim Broadbent took on the role of university dean and Shia Labeouf was on the hight of his acting career after having starred in the Transformer movies. His star had risen to its highest peak so he was the perfect choice as Mutt Williams, a rebel in the fifties with slick hair and leather jacket.

But the movie, though not a bad movie at all, was not the best Indiana Jones movie to be released. George Lucas had written a sci-fi story that was based on the Area 51 lore which for many viewers wasn’t a true Indiana Jones story. And Labeouf’s role was hated on by many who watched the movie (hence why he didn’t return for the new sequel Dial of Destiny). Also the use of the Cold War against the Russians instead of Nazis was a choice not everyone could cope with.

For me this was a great adventure and well… Lucas and Spielberg made many other sci-fi movies so why not incorporate it into an Indy-story? I guess there will always be haters! Granted, this is my least favourite Indiana-movie but still it’s a great Lazy Sunday afternoon flick! Who would have thought that a sixty-something year old Harrison Ford would come back once more when he was eighty to play one of the most active roles of his life?
