Synopsis:
Suffering from a rare genetic blood disorder, Nobel Prize-winning scientist Dr Michael Morbius knows he is living on borrowed time. And after years of fruitless attempts to find a cure, Morbius is now running out of options. But this fatal condition has been plaguing him since childhood, and he can’t afford to stop now. As desperate Morbius decides to risk his life to achieve results, an unstable and highly experimental serum offers a solution to the problem. However, what happens if the cure is worse than the disease?
Review:
Well I was warned beforehand that this wasn’t going to be the best Marvel movie adaptation and even with the warning I remain a bit flabbergasted at how this movie got made, knowing that other movies never got a release that would probably have been much better. But I have hope! Let me rant a little bit about Morbius:
First of all there’s little to no character development in this movie. We meet Morbius first in the cave where he’s looking for the blood of the bats to find a cure for his illness and then we turn back in time twenty five years to see him as a boy in hospital in Greece, meeting with Lucian aka Milo… and then we get a mishmash of things happening… Morbius turns himself into a vampire, he befriends bats and his friend Milo betrays him while the police or on the hunt for a killer. That actually sums up the movie basically.
Second of all, the movie feels messy. It jumps from scene to scene without a real storyline. And the only storyline in the movie is very thin, very undeveloped. They either cut a lot from the initial movie or they just didn’t feel the need to tell a good story here.
And third, I guess a problem a lot of these superhero/supervillain movies have in common lately: bad CGI! Again the word messy comes to mind. There are scenes where I was just cringing at how bad those were.
The movie is an origin story and if something superhero/villain movies have learned us is that origins are passé! The really are! It’s best to introduce the hero/villain in his capacity of good or bad guy already without showing how they became that way! Mention it but don’t show it… it only diminishes the strength of the movie.
It wasn’t all bad! I’m not sure Leto was the best choice for Morbius bit he did quite good. The star from the movie is Matt Smith but he wasn’t used properly. He could have been more evil and well… his death was just too quick!
I never mentioned Adria Arjona’s role because she was there but she didn’t have a lot going on for her… maybe in future movies where Morbius can play a part?
And there lies my hope. This character can be so good and can be a great adversary for future Spider-Man movies. A team up with Vulture, Scorpion, Venom, Doc Ock, Goblin or any other bad guy from the Spiderverse could make for a wonderful Sinister Six movie. And dammit, get all of them in the MCU! That’s the only true place for all these Marvel characters! A fight between Blade and Morbius, now thàt I want to see!
